Up Close: NJ Transit CEO talks 3% ticket price hike amid train meltdown, customer frustrations

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- Tens of thousands of fans are about to head to MetLife Stadium, where the eyes of the world will be watching the FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain Sunday afternoon.
How are you going to get there? NJ Transit?
Seven games have been played so far in East Rutherford, but the beleaguered system shuttled only about half the passengers it expected, costing the agency millions of dollars.
And in the middle of it, two weeks ago, was the summer's first heatwave. It led to an NJ Transit meltdown right after the annual 3% fare hike went into effect.
That's not exactly trophy-worthy for passengers.

And while the World Cup helped boost bars, hotels, and restaurants in New Jersey and New York, a new study this week revealed the Empire State is bleeding billions in tax revenue.
More millionaires left New York than any other state between 2010 to 2022. And less than a year ago, Mayor Zohran Mamdani skyrocketed to Gracie Mansion, riding a mantra of making the city more affordable, promising to "tax the rich."
But critics say that mission is chasing away the biggest taxpayer pool... big business, which is needed now more than ever to fund a soaring city budget.
What does all this mean for the future of the biggest city in the nation? The capital of capitalism.
