Firefighters battle 3-alarm house fire in Newark
NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- A three-alarm fire that started at an abandoned home in Newark spread to an occupied three-family house early Saturday morning, forcing multiple people from their homes.
The fire broke out shortly after 4 a.m., sending heavy flames and smoke into the air.
The original fire building was unoccupied and partially collapsed during the fire.
The flames then spread to a fully occupied three-family home nearby. Everyone was able to make it out safely.
The fire was raised to three alarms before firefighters brought it under control. Crews remained at the scene Saturday morning putting out hot spots.
Residents say the abandoned property where the fire began has become a problem in the neighborhood. The building also caught fire about three months ago, making Saturday's fire the second at the property in recent months.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
