Summer subway shakeup: 1, 2 and 3 lines disrupted through August
MANHATTAN (WABC) -- Thousands of subway riders heading to and from Lower Manhattan will face major service disruptions over the next five weekends as the MTA temporarily suspends and reroutes service on the 1, 2 and 3 lines beginning Friday night.
The service changes will be in effect from as early as 9:30 p.m. on Fridays through 5 a.m. on Mondays and will continue through Aug. 24 as crews replace aging track infrastructure and switches used to move trains between local and express tracks.
Under the temporary service plan:
- 1 trains will not run south of 14th Street. Service between 14th Street and South Ferry will be suspended.
- 2 trains will operate only between Eastchester-Dyre Avenue and 34th Street-Penn Station.
- 3 train service will be suspended.
The MTA said the work is necessary to replace aging tracks and switches, part of a larger effort to improve reliability along the busy subway corridor.
The planned disruptions have drawn criticism from the office of Lower Manhattan Councilman Christopher Marte, which said the service changes will affect thousands of residents and argued more advance notice could have helped commuters better prepare.
MTA officials said they notified community boards and elected officials, including Marte's office, on June 22 and have been providing information through station signage and the agency's website.
The weekend service changes begin Friday night and will remain in effect on weekends through Aug. 24. Riders are urged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
