NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- A woman and her dog were struck and killed by a driver illegally passing another car in Newark on Friday night, police say.

It happened around 10 p.m. in front of 347 Clifton Ave., which is a no-passing zone.

Police say the driver was traveling north on Clifton Avenue when the 40-year-old victim was struck.

She was crossing the street midblock when she was struck. Her dog was also killed, according to the victim's daughter.

Witnesses in another car say the driver passed them on the wrong side of the road and was speeding at the time.

The driver remained on the scene after the crash. It is not yet clear if he is facing charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
