Horse carriage drivers to be retrained in Central Park

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- The safety stand-down continues to be in effect on horse carriages after the crash that killed an 18-year-old tourist last Wednesday.

On Monday, drivers will take refresher training inside Central Park with horse-drawn carriages, but no passenger tours will be conducted.

The union representing carriage drivers temporarily stopped the controversial rides after the horrific accident near Tavern on the Green.

The victim was thrown from the carriage when the horse suddenly ran off.

The driver was taking a picture of the victim and his relatives when the animal was spooked.

Before the rides resume, drivers will undergo additional training to try and prevent another disaster.

The accident happened just a week after another horse ate a poisonous plant and died in the park.

The City Council is expected to hold a hearing soon on whether carriage rides should be permanently banned.
