NEW YORK (WABC) -- Hundreds of people gathered at Pier 84 along the Hudson River on Saturday to watch tall ships sail past and fighter jets streak across the sky as part of a celebration marking the nation's 250th birthday.

Spectators from across the country lined the waterfront, taking in the ship parade and aerial demonstrations while photographing dozens of vessels from other countries participating in the celebration of America's founding.

"I think this is awesome. This is going great. I love the boat show. I liked the air show earlier," said Hailey Glasgow of Florida.

For some visitors, the event was an unexpected bonus.

"We did not expect this. We just came in, booked this. And not knowing all these events were going on, we're blessed. Very, very blessed. It was an awesome show," said Kathy Elliot of Florida.

Attendees said the celebration offered an opportunity to reflect on national pride and shared values.

"I love it so much because it's also when we get to share with the world just who we are and why we are American," said Jarret Freeman of Alaska.

"To be able to do the things that we enjoy and to live in peace, I think that means a lot," said John McSweeney of Massapequa.

For Andy Meek of Dallas, the day carried additional significance.

"Today's my 50th birthday. So I was born on the centennial. Today I'm turning 50. The country's 250. I feel like we're linked," Meek said.

Despite hot temperatures, many attendees wore red, white and blue while enjoying the festivities along the waterfront.

"And the fact that you can come to the pier for free like that. I didn't charge for this. Certain areas you had to get the ticket for. But the fact that we can all do this as one country, as one city united today is incredible," said Tiffany Mattson of Queens.
