NEW YORK (WABC) -- If you're planning to stay in this weekend and stream something new, Priyanka Chopra and Karl Urban star in the new action film The Bluff, now streaming on Amazon Prime.
The movie is inspired by Caribbean pirate lore and blends high-intensity action with a story about family and betrayal.
Chopra plays a notorious former pirate who must protect her family at all costs. Urban portrays the man she once betrayed and who now wants revenge. When her character is forced to revisit that pirate past, the film delivers John Wick-style action with a strong mother-bear storyline at its core.
Chopra told Entertainment Reporter Joelle Garguilo that her two-year-old daughter was actually on set for some of the filming.
"My two-year-old was with us at the time," Chopra said. "She saw me with fake blood on me... I showed her what it was made of and told her we were playing pretend. That's what mommy does. We're making movies."
Director Frank Flowers says pirate lore has been part of his upbringing in the Cayman Islands.
"My family has been there for hundreds of years, maybe since the first map of the island; my family's name was on it," Flowers said. "Pirates Week is a national festival. There's a fake invasion with boats and pyrotechnics, sword fights. It's bananas. I grew up hearing stories about Blackbeard and buried treasure. Do I know if they're true? No. But we're here to tell stories, not to be historians."
When it came to researching their roles, both actors said they were surprised by what they learned.
"When I read the script, I thought it was a fantasy of some kind because female pirates. I hadn't really heard of them," Chopra said.
Urban said he was particularly interested in the history of the British East India Company.
"One of the more interesting facts I learned was about the British East India Company and the way they used to operate," Urban said. "In order to expand the British Empire, they essentially sanctioned pirates. That felt like fertile ground to base my character on."
