Search underway in Rockaway Beach for missing 18-year-old swimmer

ROCKAWAY BEACH, Queens (WABC) -- A search is underway in Queens following reports of a missing swimmer on Tuesday.

FDNY officials say they received a report around 3:30 p.m. of a 17-year-old boy missing in the water at Beach 73rd Street and Shore Front Parkway in Rockaway Beach.

Several witnesses say they saw the victim enter the water off Rockaway Beach and did not see him come out.

Police sources told Eyewitness News that the victim went into the ocean with his friend. They say the victim was overtaken by a wave at the same time as his friend was able to come back up.

FDNY rescue swimmers, drones, marine units and the NYPD are on the scene searching.

All divers were removed from the water, and marine units came up with negative results just before 5 p.m.

One civilian with minor injuries was evaluated by EMS on the scene and refused medical transport. One civilian, the 17-year-old boy, remains missing, according to officials.

The scene has been turned over to the NYPD. The investigation is ongoing.

Lifeguards don't go on duty at city beaches until Saturday.
