WHITE PLAINS, New York (WABC) -- The trial for the man accused of beating a social worker to death in Peekskill got underway on Wednesday.
Prosecutors say 32-year-old Hasseem Jenkins killed 56-year-old Maria Coto after she knocked on the wrong apartment door while looking for a client.
The incident happened May 14 of last year while Coto was conducting home visits on South Street in Peekskill.
Prosecutors allege Jenkins repeatedly punched her in the face, chased her into a neighbor's apartment and repeatedly kicked her in the head while wearing heavy boots.
Coto went into a coma but never regained consciousness and later died from her injuries on June 19.
During opening statements on Wednesday, a prosecutor told the jury about graphic testimony they will hear and see.
During the attack, Coto managed to call 911. Prosecutors say the line remained open and jurors will hear those final, violent moments.
Jenkins showed little emotion during the opening statements.
Prosecutors don't have to prove motive, but say Jenkins had past dealings with social services and was behind on his rent.
Jenkins' lawyer plans to introduce involuntary intoxication as a defense, claiming the 32-year-old smoked a cigarette he didn't know was laced with PCP.
The defense claims despite the evidence, prosecutors will have a difficult time proving intent.
Jenkins was initially charged with attempted murder but pleaded not guilty after the charge was upgraded to murder. He is also facing charges for robbery and resisting arrest after police say he was found with the victim's phone in his pocket.
