Explosion and fire in Staten Island shipyard injures at least 16 people, including firefighters

16 people hurt, including firefighters, EMS in Staten Island shipyard blast

STATEN ISLAND, New York (WABC) -- More than a dozen people were injured, including firefighters, following an explosion and fire at a shipyard on Staten Island, according to the FDNY officials.

It happened at 3075 Richmond Terrace between Lockman Avenue and Andros Avenue.

The FDNY says they received a report of workers trapped around 3:30 p.m., and a fire in a basement of a metal structure in the back of shipping docks.

They say a major explosion occurred around 4:20 p.m.

At least 16 people were injured, including one civilian and two firefighters who suffered serious injuries, two firefighters who suffered moderate injuries, and nine firefighters and two EMS members who suffered minor injuries. They were taken to area hospitals.

A second worker is in unknown condition, and may still be unaccounted for.

Several firefighters issued maydays while battling the blaze. They have all been located and are being treated.

It's not clear yet what caused the explosion and fire.

Officials are asking drivers to avoid the area amid road closures due to the emergency response.
