Memorial held for Detective Brian Moore in Queens Village

QUEENS VILLAGE, Queens (WABC) -- A memorial service was held Wednesday to remember an NYPD officer killed one year ago.

Brian Moore, who was shot in Queens Village, had followed in his father's footsteps when he joined the NYPD.

The 50 degree rain rolled down the hats, uniforms, and faces of hundreds of his fellow officers who stood in the middle of 104th Road to honor the young police officer shot to death on the street last year.

"With this turnout today in this terrible weather, I know Brian would be very proud of his co-workers.. and the community that he protected so diligently," said the officer's father, Raymond Moore.

Moore was just 25 years old, but was already a decorated New York City police officer with over 150 arrests.

He was shot in the face while trying to stop a man with a gun while on patrol. Demetrius Blackwell will stand trial for the officer's murder.

"He had the gift that as policemen we all wish we possessed, that ability, that instinct ability to spot the danger, to spot trouble and move toward it," said NYPD Commissioner William Bratton.

Brian's mother urged officers Wednesday to re-focus their grief.

"When he walked into the room he lit up the room everytime he walked in. Everybody wanted to be near him, everybody couldn't wait for him to show up," said Irene Moore. "So let's all take a moment and remember one of those good memories that we have of him, and that way we will keep him alive in our hearts," said Irene Moore.

Inspector Mike Coyle was Brian's commanding officer.

"Just gonna go back to the 105 and put my arm around a couple of my guys and spend the day remembering Brian," he said.

The intersection of 222nd Street and 92nd Road has been renamed "Detective First Grade Brian Moore Way."
