MONTAUK, Long Island (WABC) -- Some might say that too much salt is bad for your health, but at the Montauk Salt Cave, Himalayan salt covers the floors and keeps members coming back for more holistic treatments.
"We're all about getting salty - just releasing and relaxing and letting go," said owner Shannon Coppola.
The Montauk Salt Cave offers sessions varying from crystal singing bowls, to instructor-read Reiki readings.
"The first session was definitely a breathing feeling," said participant Wendy Duryea, "The sinuses cleared - look at that - this feels great!"
The halotherapy treatment combats conditions such as anxiety, sleeplessness, asthma, allergies, inflammation, and even the common cold.
"A typical salt cave session entails a room full of eight tons of pink Himalayan salt, and you're absorbing 84 minerals, which is called speleotherapy," owner Shannon Coppola said. "Coupled with that is halotherapy, where we pump in pharmaceutical grade salt and all the salt is antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory."
Shannon's inspiration was her son. When her son Oliver was born, he had severe breathing issues. Oliver's parents treated him for asthma and allergies to attempt to clear his cough - with no resolve.
"We took him to a salt room and he slept for the first time at four and a half years old," said Coppola, "Oliver comes at least once a week and he's now a happy, healthy little boy."
The Montauk Salt Cave has two other locations, one in the middle of the island in Huntington and the other in Manhattan located in the East Village.
