U.S. Airman Spencer Stone who helped stop gunman on train in Europe stabbed in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (WABC) -- An Ameriacn hero who helped subdue an attacker on a French train is in the hospital in California after he was stabbed in a fight outside a bar in Sacramento.

Douglas Kirk, chief medical officer at UC Davis Medical Center, says Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone suffered three wounds to the torso and underwent surgery but is expected to make a full recovery.

The incident happened at about 12:45 a.m. near 21st Street and K Street in Sacramento.

Police, who have not yet named Stone, said the victim was out with a group of friends when a fight broke out and the victim was stabbed multiple times in his upper body.

Early details in case indicate that Stone was apparently protecting a friend.

Police say two assailants fled in a car.

A1C Spencer Stone has been transported to a local hospital, and is currently being treated for injury. The incident is currently under investigation by local law enforcement. He is currently in stable condition.

Police said the victim's injuries appear to be non-life threatening.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident.

One of the two other men who helped stop the attack, National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos, posted this message to Twitter Thursday morning:

Stone, Skarlatos, and Anthony Sadler are being credited for stopping a gunman on a Paris-bound passenger train on Sept. 11, 2015.
