FDNY members shave heads for children's cancer research in Queens

LITTLE NECK, Queens (WABC) -- Several New York City firefighters are bald now and all for a good cause.

It isn't a barber shop, but a firehouse in Little Neck, Queens, where heads are being shaved to raise money for children's cancer research.

13-year-old Petey Miceli was shaving his own father's head on Monday.

Both Peter and his son Petey are all too familiar with having no hair.

Petey was diagnosed with leukemia at age 7, and when his hair fell out from chemotherapy, his father shaved his own head in solidarity.

The event Monday benefited the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which funds childhood cancer research.

The organization has raised more than $200 million since 2005.

Some of that went to support research at Cohen's Children's Medical Center where Petey was treated.

Much more funding is needed and every bit counts, including the $8,000 Petey hoped to raise.

Tuesday, after a blood test, Petey hopes to learn he is cancer free, but his battle with cancer helps him have the courage to do this.

"For all the cancer patients that are losing their hair, we're here to show them we are here for them," Petey said.
