NEW YORK (WABC) -- Sabrina Cammock's stepmother and little brother were too upset to talk on Sunday. In a matter of minutes the bottom dropped out of their world the second they learned that Sabrina, a Syracuse University track star, was found dead.
Long time friend and neighbor Jerald Dash watched the 21-year-old grow up in St. Albans, Queens, and spoke with Sabrina's father on Sunday morning.
"Well, he is trying to keep his head above water, he's just trying to hold himself," said Dash, "you can see he's really hurt."
It is still not clear what happened to the college senior, who was back home for spring break, staying with friends, staying at the Edison Hotel in Midtown.
The group went out on Friday night, and came back to their room. On Saturday morning, Sabrina was found unconscious and unresponsive in bed. Police say there were no signs of trauma. The Medical Examiner told Eyewitness News that further testing is needed to pinpoint a cause of death.
There was no doubt that Sabrina was a gifted sprinter. She had just competed last week, and her coach at Syracuse called her a "remarkable person and student athlete."
"She was serious about her education, she didn't play around, and everyone loved her for that," said Sabrina's relative, Kemor Brown.
Sabrina was the oldest of four and had two brothers and a baby sister.
"I always teased her when I saw her, I didn't know she was driving - I thought it was her mother, and she said 'sure, sure I'm driving' - she was very nice," says Jerald Dash.
Syracuse University sent a letter to students, faculty and staff, which read, in part,
"It is a painful time for our entire campus community whenever we are faced with a tragedy such as this. We mourn as a campus community with all those whose lives Sabrina touched."
