People of New York are trying different tactics to beat the heat.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Record heat hits the northeast Monday as severe weather takes aim at our area and an official heat wave kicks into gear.

Our cameras caught video of people dealing with the heat in the Bronx, Yonkers and Newark.

Air quality warnings and advisories are out from Virginia to Connecticut.

Officials urging children and anyone with breathing problems to avoid the outdoors.

And once inside, remember to conserve power and unplug any unnecessary devices.

If you must go out remember to wear light colored clothing and drink plenty of water.

The National Weather Service said high pressure overhead will bring very high temperatures and humid weather through Thursday. This is the first heat wave since 2013.

There will also be an increasing threat of showers and thunderstorms beginning Tuesday.
