NEW YORK (WABC) -- New York City and the Tri-State area are entering a stretch of intense summer weather as humidity surges and heat builds across the region.

Conditions are becoming increasingly uncomfortable, with the next two days expected to bring sweltering temperatures and the threat of strong thunderstorms. Highs will climb well into the 90s on Thursday and Friday, and with the humidity, it could feel closer to 100 degrees during the afternoon hours.

As the heat peaks, attention also turns to the potential for storms. On Thursday, thunderstorms are likely to develop during the afternoon and continue into the early evening. Some of these storms could become severe, producing damaging wind gusts, hail, and drenching downpours that may lead to localized flooding. While the chance remains low, an isolated and brief tornado cannot be completely ruled out, especially in areas north of New York City. This risk, however, is considered more of an exception than the rule.

On Friday, a similar pattern is expected, though storms may shift later in the day, with activity more likely in the evening and slightly less intense severe conditions overall.

The nights will offer little relief from the heat and humidity. Temperatures are expected to remain warm, hovering around the low 70s, with muggy conditions persisting and the possibility of scattered evening thunderstorms continuing to bring brief heavy rain.

By the weekend, however, the weather begins to improve. Humidity levels are expected to drop, bringing more comfortable conditions while temperatures remain warm. Saturday is shaping up to be mostly sunny with a high near 88 degrees, making it an excellent day for outdoor plans. Major events such as the World Cup match at MetLife Stadium and the Puerto Rican Day Parade should benefit from the favorable weather, which is expected to stay dry through most of the day. There is only a slight chance of a late-day or evening shower, but it is not expected to disrupt daytime activities.

Sunday continues the generally pleasant pattern, although there is a small chance of a late-day or evening thundershower. Overall, the weekend represents a welcome break from the oppressive humidity of the preceding days.

For those heading to the beaches, water temperatures are gradually warming, reaching around 70 degrees in New York Harbor, while most area beaches are in the low to mid-60s, with slightly warmer readings along the Jersey Shore. Conditions on the water will feature a light southwest wind near 10 miles per hour, somewhat choppy waves, and a moderate risk of rip currents, so caution is advised.

Other factors to keep in mind include moderate air quality, a medium-to-high pollen count, and a very high UV index of 9, meaning sun protection will be important during peak daylight hours.

Looking ahead to early next week, the unsettled pattern tapers off. Monday may bring a slight chance of showers or storms, but nothing particularly significant is expected. By Tuesday, a few scattered showers remain possible, though most of the rain may stay to the south. Sunshine is likely to return by Wednesday, with cooler and more comfortable conditions and highs around 70 degrees.
