AccuWeather: Light rain, not a washout

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The weekend is shaping up to be a mixed bag, but far from a washout. While there are no standout summer days in the forecast, periods of rain will be limited, and many outdoor plans should still be able to go forward.

Saturday will be dominated by clouds, although some breaks are expected, especially across inland areas. Patchy light rain is possible in the morning, mainly from New York City southward and westward. During the afternoon, showers will become more widely scattered. Coastal New Jersey is at higher risk of more persistent rainfall, while areas farther north and west are expected to remain the driest. Temperatures will be on the cool side for late August, staying closer to 80 degrees rather than reaching the low 80s that are typical for this time of year.

Sunday will be a little warmer, with more breaks in the clouds and occasional sunny periods. Thundershowers are possible, including one around sunrise, followed by a few spotty showers during the day. Despite the unsettled conditions, widespread rain is not expected.

Looking ahead, the start of next week appears fairly pleasant, although temperatures will remain below normal. Monday will be partly sunny with only the chance of a stray shower. Tuesday looks like the nicest day of the stretch, featuring a mix of sun and clouds. Wednesday is expected to be partly sunny as the region sits between storm systems. Thunderstorm chances return Thursday before sunshine makes a comeback on Friday.
