GREENPOINT (WABC) -- A startling sight in a Brooklyn park was caught on camera Sunday afternoon.

A dust devil formed on the baseball field at McCarren Park in Greenpoint around 3:30.

Several eyewitnesses recorded the phenomenon on their smartphones and started posting videos and images on social media.

According to eyewitnesses, the funnel cloud lasted about a minute.

27-year old J.J. Litchford captured a few seconds of it on his cellphone. "I think the general consensus was, how did that just happen. What in the world is going on, this is Brooklyn. You don't expect a minor, tornado-looking thing on a Sunday afternoon," said Litchford.

The red funnel caught everyone by surprise at the park. It came out of nowhere on a baseball field, while a game was going on.

"It was probably 20 feet in diameter and it was just swirling up. So it started on the ground, over clay, and then you just saw an orange funnel over here," said Litchford. "It took a very distinctive shape."

Litchford said his first instinct was to pull out his cellphone and start recording, but he was surprised that his friends didn't. They sat paralyzed in amazement, and could only stare at it.

"Some people who weren't scared were running back and forth through it because it was so interesting," Litchford said. "So it was really powerful but it wasn't that strong."
