SAN FRANCISCO -- Greeted by vaulted ceilings and intricate stained glass windows, 500+ San Franciscans fill Grace Cathedral every Tuesday night for an enriching yoga event unlike any other in the Bay Area.
Led by yoga instructor Darren Main, "Yoga on the Labyrinth" invites participants to unfold their colorful yoga mats throughout the awe-inspiring space for an hour and fifteen minutes of pure serenity.
"Yoga studios and gyms are great places to practice, but they're typically more small, austere," described Main. "When you're doing a Sun Salutation in this beautiful gothic space, you really get a sense of your place in the universe."
Place your matt behind the altar, on the Labyrinth, between the pews--almost anywhere to fully experience one of the most iconic cathedrals in San Francisco. Revolving around a universal theme, the weekly practice focuses on breathwork and gentle yoga to promote centeredness while dismantling barriers and building community.
"I think it's the true spirit of yoga and San Francisco," explained Stuart Burden, who has attended the session for 10 years and counting. "It is open to all, any level, religion, no religion, come as you are. And you're welcome here."
Grace Cathedral is known as an inclusive church rooted in social justice and outreach, encouraging all to live their truth in a safe community space.
"Our bodies are connected through these invisible ligaments of grace, the things that separate us begin to fall away," discussed Grace Cathedral Reverend Jude Harmon.
"My hope is that they can come on Tuesday nights, recharge their batteries, find their center, and then go out and be a better version of themselves," said Main. "Hopefully making the world a better place."
