2nd woman in LI water rescue dies; victims ID'd

LONG ISLAND The second victim involved in this crash died early Friday morning. She has been identified as 68-year-old Margrit Mueller, of 20 Laurel Ave., East Islip. The first victim, who died on January 7, has been identified as 66-year-old Ellen Halvorsen, of 204 Brentwood Road, Bay Shore.

Third Precinct police officers John McAuley, Christopher Verwys, Miguel Vias and Jason Morge responded to the call. When the officers saw the car in the marina, they immediately jumped into the cold water to rescue the victims. They were joined by two civilians, Greg Vegel of Central Islip, and John Cabral of Bay Shore.

The rescuers were able to extricate one woman from the vehicle. The other victim was subsequently removed by Bay Shore firemen. Both victims were transported to Southside Hospital, where Halvorsen was pronounced dead.
