Car plunges into water in Brooklyn

GREENPOINT Police say the car careened through a fence and plunged into the water, off of Apollo Street in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, at around 3:30 a.m.

Eyewitness News has learned one man, in his 20s, was pulled from the creek, screaming that people were still trapped below. He was rushed to Woodhull Hospital in stable condition.

"He was a little upset, I don't know..I can't answer much more than that," said Dep. Chief Howard Fickles/FDNY.

Divers were quickly dispatched to search for the car and possible victims in the murky water. Meanwhile, an NYPD helicopter hovered above.

Greg David works next door to the accident, he says he heard the car lose control.

"No screeching of the tires or nothing, just racing of an engine, coming down here fast," David told Eyewitness News.

After two hours of searching, a second person was reportedly discovered dead in the water.

Five emergency workers were treated for minor injuries.

Police say speed was a factor in this deadly crash.
