Bill helping grandparents faces uncertainty

EAST HARTFORD, CT A bill would have ensured those grandparents receive the same monthly state aid currently given to foster parents. Grandparents raising their grandchildren currently get up to $330 per month, compared to $740 per month for foster parents.

Grandparents say they're being punished for trying to do the right thing, and lawmakers who've taken up their cause say they won't stop pushing to equalize the payments.

Census figures say more than 21,000 Connecticut children are being raised by their grandparents, compared with about 3,300 children in foster care.
