A city hall official says a North Brunswick police officer has been killed in a motor vehicle accident that left another officer injured. Janice Larkin, an assistant to North Brunswick Mayor Francis Womack III, says the second officer is still being treated at a hospital. She did not know the severity of his injuries.

The officer that died has been identified as 41-year-old Lt. Christopher Zerby, from Robbinsville, Mercer County. Police say Zerby grew up in North Brunswick, and had been a township police officer for more than 16 years. Zerby was the township's lead traffic safety officer for the past year.

The other officer is Lt. Keith Buckley, 40, of Jackson, was treated at St. Peter's University Hospital for various injuries. He's listed in serious but stable condition. Buckley is an 18-year veteran of the police department.

The accident happened before noon Tuesday on Route 130 South, just south of the Route 1 intersection.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office. It is not clear who was driving at the time of the crash.
