Kovacevic had played basketball for Binghamton University in northern New York state. He fled to Serbia after being charged in the severe beating of Bryan Steinhauer during a May 4 bar fight.
Kovacevic has refused to return to the United States for a trial. Serbia says its laws do not allow extradition of its citizens.
Blic on Monday also quoted Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic as saying Kovacevic's decision to stay in Serbia was his "personal choice."
