Attempted robbery results in gunfire

WEST HEMPSTEAD Authorities say the 35-year-old victim was held up as he got out of his car after pulling into the driveway of his Oakford Street home just before 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Two suspects reportedly held him up, and then one opened fire. The would-be victim returned fire with his licensed handgun.

The suspects fled on foot eastbound on Oakford street. Police say one of the men, 30-year-old Jose Celis of West Hempstead, was caught on Elm Street after a brief search of the area.

The second suspect escaped, and authorities were looking for him. He was described as a black man, six feet tall, wearing dark clothing.

Authorities have charged Celis with attempted murder, attempted robbery, criminal use of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon.

The homeowner was not injured, and it is not expected that any charges will be filed against him.
