Homeless man accused in church burglaries

STATEN ISLAND Authorities say the 42-year-old suspect staked out churches by sitting in on Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. They say he confessed to 12 church burglaries after being arrested while trying to break into the First Central Baptist Church in Staten Island's Stapleton section.

District Attorney spokesman Daniel Donovan says the man was arrested about 12:30 a.m. Saturday while using a screwdriver to break into a basement window at the Baptist church.

Authorities say he confessed to committing the other burglaries during questioning. They say he faces burglary and other charges for the Saturday break-in.
