Man gunned down in Queens

QUEENS The incident happened in a quiet, residential, dead-end street, and police say a man who was driving his jeep was fatally shot.

Police believe the suspect was attempting to rob the victim and for one reason or another, authorities say the suspect shot the man.

Police say the victim is identified as 56-year-old John Bazemore, who was killed by a single shot to his torso.

The man, according to authorities, was driving in his jeep around 7:30 p.m. when he was shot, forcing his car to crash into several other cars.

By the time police arrived, the suspect had fled the scene.

Friends and relatives say Bazemorewas a churchgoing father and grandfather, and they're mystified by the slaying.

Next-door neighbor Rachel Gordon, a pastor, says Bazemore was known for helping out in his community. She says he often helped her pack her car with Bibles and pamphlets she needed for meetings.

Fiancee Yolanda Williams says Bazemore had two daughters and five grandchildren. She says he was interested in race cars as a hobby.
