Rockefeller ice skating rink opens

NEW YORK The Rink at Rockefeller Center opened for the 2008-2009 winter season on Monday.

In a press release, the rink was described as "New York City's oldest harbinger of cold weather to come." But the temperature in Central Park at 8 a.m. Monday was a balmy 61 degrees. The high for the day is expected to reach 77.

The season kicked off with "Chefs on Ice" passing out cookies baked by the restaurants overlooking the Rockefeller rink.

New York City's two other popular ice skating rinks are scheduled to reopen later this month. The rink at Bryant Park, behind the New York Public Library, is set to open next Monday.

Wollman Rink in Central Park will greet skaters on Oct. 24.
