Home-cooked meals on a budget

NEW YORK And we're not talking about take-out. Instead, these are meals you help to make. And perhaps the best part is when you sit down to enjoy them with your family.

You wouldn't know it by looking at Kat Pauley, but she's not the only one at work in her kitchen. Because it's no ordinary kitchen. It's at a Long Island strip mall, inside a place called Dream Dinners.

"We do the chop shop," Dream Dinner's Betsy Hall said. "You do the rest."

Customers come in come in and simply follow the recipes that are provided. Everything is within your reach, including measuring spoons, baggies, containers and, most importantly, all the food.

"We provide side dishes," Dream Dinner's Mindy Rogers said. "And desserts also ready to take."

Usually it takes about an hour an a half to assemble 32 servings worth of food. That's dinner for four, twice a week. And since Dream Dinners gets all their food in bulk, you can save on the cost of ingredients.

One option is almond chicken, which Kat finishes preparing at home. Yes, it's a home-cooked meal for about $4 a serving.

It's dinner with the entire family, without all the fuss.

And also, you don't have all the cleanup, since everything is done for you!

There are five Dream Dinner locations in the Tri-State area. For more information, visit DreamDinners.com.
