NJ Turnpike Authority cuts jobs

Seeking to control costs, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority will cut 80 positions in 2009 and maintain a hiring and promotion freeze, but no layoffs are planned. Officials say the moves will keep the agency's 2009 operating budget at $481 million, the same level as last year.

Authority spokesman Joe Orlando said most of the jobs being eliminated are toll collector positions, adding that dozens of those slots are currently unfilled. He said the remaining jobs will be cut through attrition.

In approving the budget on Wednesday, the agency's Board of Commissioners also announced that it will cut overtime, reduce the number of vehicles assigned to employees from 202 to 52 and lower discretionary spending to reduce controllable operating expenditures by 2 percent.
