This could be a tough sell for Bloomberg. Some Republican leaders don't like his politics, and one Queens chairman says if the mayor wants their votes, he needs to become a Republican again.
The Mayor has said he will not change his affiliation from Independent.
Bloomberg started as a Democrat and turned Republican before coming Independent.
Even if Bloomberg gets the Republicans to agree to his proposal, a bill set to go before the Assembly Committee on Election Law threatens to undo the City Council's term limit decision. Back in October the City Council decided a voter referendum was not needed for the Mayor to run for a third time.
Once the election committee votes on the term limit issue, the bill will go before the Senate Elections Committee. That committee appears to have the votes needed to pass the bill, and if approved, the bill will pass and head to the State Legislature.
Bloomberg has also talked to the Independents and the Working Family Party.
