Arrest in Christmas skating rink killing

ELIZABETH, N.J. The 16-year-old from Elizabeth was arrested at about 8 a.m. and later charged with first-degree murder.

His identity was not released because he is a juvenile, but Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow said he would file a motion in the next few days to have the case moved to adult court.

The Christmas night shooting outside the Skate 22 rink in Union claimed the life of 16-year-old Jean D'Haiti.

A private party that drew from 500 to 700 people was shut down just after midnight because of fighting inside the rink, according to Romankow. D'Haiti was with a group of fellow Haitian teenagers from Elizabeth when they got in a dispute with reputed Bloods members from Elizabeth, Romankow said.

"They saw each other in the parking lot and sparks flew," Romankow said.

The Haitian group began chasing the others when the suspect turned and fired two or three shots, striking D'Haiti, Romankow said.
