Man charged in child care sex assault

NEWARK Essex County assistant prosecutor Carolyn Murray announced the arrest 34-year-old Jose Reyes.

Reyes was taken into custody Wednesday at the Can Do Fitness Center. He is charged with four-counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault and four counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

According to Essex County assistant prosecutor Deborah Freier, on April 6, 2009, Bloomfield police contacted the Essex County prosecutor's Special Victims Unit on a complaint raised by the 17-year-old victim and his mother.

The suspect, a longtime friend of the family, allegedly assaulted the victim on numerous occasions between the ages of 9 and 12 at his home in Newark and at the victim's home in Bloomfield.

Detectives say Reyes frequently offers to babysit the children of friends and family members.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information about these incidents or other possible incidents are asked to contact Lieutenant Charles Hancock of the Essex County prosecutor's Special Victims Unit at (973) 753-1123.
