Politician defeats actor in Bronx election

A state assemblyman from a political family has beaten a former "Sopranos" actor for the Bronx borough president's job after the last winner took a White House post. Assemblyman Ruben Diaz Jr. had an overwhelming lead over Anthony J. Ribustello in incomplete returns in Tuesday's nonpartisan special election to replace Adolfo Carrion Jr. He became the White House director of urban affairs last month.

Diaz is the son of a prominent state senator and a Democrat in the heavily Democratic borough. Ribustello, a Republican district leader, is best known for playing Tony Soprano's driver on the HBO series.

Diaz will serve the remainder of Carrion's term, through Dec. 31.

The borough president appoints community board members and monitors the administration of city services in the Bronx.
