More NJ sex assault victims come forward

NEWARK Jose Reyes, 34, who was arrested last Wednesday at a fitness center in Short Hills and charged with four counts of first-degree aggravated assault and four counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, is now facing additional charges.

Six counts of second-degree sexual assault by contact and six counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child have now been added. Reyes remains in the Essex County Jail in lieu of $350,000 bail.

Reyes had been employed as a child care assistant at the Can Do Fitness Center, located at 750 Morris and Essex Turnpike in Short Hills.

According to Essex County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Robert Laurino, upon Reyes' arrest last week, detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor's Special Victims Unit developed information leading to the additional charges.

On Monday, detectives determined that Reyes, between November 2006 and November 2007, allegedly sexually assaulted a 15-year-old Montclair boy on numerous occasions. In addition, between March 2008 and March 2009, Reyes allegedly sexually assaulted a 6-year-old boy from Newark.

Detectives developed information that the assaults occurred while Reyes, being a friend of victims' families, was baby sitting both boys, on separate occasions, at his Newark apartment.

According to Prosecutor Paula Dow, on April 6, 2009, Bloomfield Police contacted the Essex County Prosecutor's Special Victims Unit on a complaint raised by a 17-year-old victim and his mother. Reyes, a longtime friend of the family, allegedly assaulted the victim on numerous occasions between the ages of 9 and 12 at his apartment in Newark and at the victim's home in Bloomfield.
