Description:
The Neptune High School JumpStart Medical Internship program at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) is a year long program in which high school seniors work twice a month with a mentor from the JSUMC staff of doctors and nurses.

The thirteen highly motivated seniors who participate in the internship shadow practicing physicians and nurses in the hospital environment and have often gotten "hands on" experience. Dressing in gowns and gloves, the students have held a human brain, gall stones, a diseased lung and viewed a recently amputated leg. They are encouraged to ask questions and the program has become a life altering experience for all involved.

This program is a unique opportunity for students interested in pursuing higher education in the healthcare, clinical research and medicine fields. Several of the students have narrowed their career choices and have forged relationships that will benefit them as they continue their education.

Much of the credit for the success of this program goes to program advisor Ms. Sue Harms, a guidance counselor whose leadership, work ethic and encouragement has made this program one of the most successful student-centered initiatives at Neptune High School.
