U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to review the fatal shooting of the New York City police officer by a fellow officer.
Twenty-year-old Edwards, who was off duty, was killed by 'friendly fire' last week while chasing a man who broke into his car in East Harlem.
Rangel's letter to Attorney General Eric Holder was dated and released on Tuesday.
Rangel also asks investigators to examine what role race may have played in the shooting. Edwards was black; the officer who shot him is white.
Edwards is survived by a wife and two young children.
