Stray bullet strikes boy in Newark

NEWARK The shooting occurred at the corner of Avon and Hillside avenues.

According to investigators, a man exited a gray or silver SUV and approached another man on the corner around 5:30 p.m.

Following a brief conversation, police said the man from SUV pulled out a gun and fired at least 8 shots.

Officers arrived to find a 12-year old boy and a 23-year old man wounded by gunfire.

The boy was shot in his butt, arm and stomach. He was not an intended victim, police said.

The adult suffered at least one shot to his back area.

Both were transported to UMDNJ for treatment. Both were expected to survive, although the boy's injuries were described as serious.

Tips leading to arrests and indictments could result in cash rewards of up to $ 2,000 to the person who provides the information or $1,000 per gun for calls into the Gun hot line.
