Corrections officials had announced the closing in January and began transferring prisoners to other facilities throughout the state. The prison, which had room for about 1,000 inmates, opened in 1985 and was the second newest in the state system.
However, its prime waterfront location has troubled Camden area leaders for years, and it's hoped that redeveloping the 17-acre tract - just north of the Ben Franklin Bridge - will be the catalyst for the area's rebirth.
Camden leaders want residences and recreational areas built on the site, but final plans for the property have not been determined.
