Officer hospitalized after violent chase

NEWARK, N.J. Detective Joseph Juliano is recovering at University Hospital in Newark.

He has a fractured rib and broken arm.

Juliano, from the East Orange Violent Crimes task force, was traveling in an unmarked car Tuesday night -- a vehicle he had to eventually be cut out of.

  • SLIDESSHOW: Newark police chase

The chase ended in a crash at the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and East Peddie Street.

That's where witnesses say they saw the unmarked police car speeding down the avenue -- chasing the suspects' car, which officials say had been carjacked in Newark on June 19.

The police car reportedly tried to cut off the suspect, but they rammed to officer's vehicle -- hitting the car in the front end.

People in the area then remember the suspects getting out of the car and taking off on foot.

    But officers did arrest them.

Both cars were heavily damaged in the collision.

Another police officer was injured in the crash. He was treated and released from the hospital.

How the chase all started remains under investigation, but Mayor Cory Booker said, "this insanity must end."
