House fire kills 2 in Newark

NEWARK Newscopter-7 was live over the scene.

The fire broke out inside 191 custer avenue just before 5:30 a.m., trapping residents on the second floor.

Firefighters battled the flames and pull three residents from the burning home.

Eyewitness News has learned a 22-year-old man and a 15-year old girl were pronounced dead at the scene. The third was rushed to the burn unit at St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition.

Three others were hurt. One reportedly escaped with minor injuries and two others were uninjured after jumping out a back window.

Crying neighbors, friends and family rushed to the scene. The fire apparently started on the first floor.

Firefighters quickly put out the flames, but the house was not habitable. Four adults and one child were relocated after the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
