Dad charged with abandoning little girl

UPPER EAST SIDE He later told police it was a big misunderstanding.

Edwin Rivera was charged with child abandonment and endangering the welfare of a child. He will be arraigned later today.

Riveria left the young girl, still strapped in her stroller, on the sidewalk of First Avenue and East 62nd Street.

Witnesses said he took the little girl out of his car, leaned the stroller next to a parking meter, and then drove off.

The girl was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where she was listed stable condition.

Hours later, police said Rivera showed up at the 19th Precinct station house. He told detectives he had gotten into an argument with the girl's mother and got out of the car in anger.

According to Rivera, he took the stroller out of the car and leaned it against the meter to keep it from rolling away.

He then drove off, thinking that the mother was going to take the baby. She had already left.

The mother was not charged in connection with the incident.
