Carol Linton has nothing but anger and frustration for Pet Depot, the pet store that sold her her prized lab-German shepherd mix, Hannibal, last year. The Brick Township resident says ever since she bought him, he's had one health problem after another. "As soon as he, we put him in the truck to bring him home, he vomited three times."
At first, Carol brought Hannibal back to Pet Depot, it's on-site vet treated him. But Carol says the vet didn't cure him.
So Carol took Hannibal to her own vet, who diagnosed him with an intestinal parasite called Giardia, and declared the dog, "unfit for sale."
But Pet Depot never reimbursed her for vet costs, so she went to arbitration, through New Jersey's Consumer Affairs. In June, she found she won more than $700.
"I'm still waiting. (I haven't gotten) anything."
It's not the first time Pet Depot has had problems. In 2006, the store signed a consent order, promising to pay consumers $27,500.
We went to Pet Depot's new location in Sea Girt. But the owner wasn't in. But still, just days after we left...
"I got a check and if it wasn't for you guys I'm sure I wouldn't of," beamed the proud pet owner.
So what took so long? We went back and asked the Pet Depot's owner. He said the reason for the slow payment was because "business... is slow."
Both New York and New Jersey have puppy lemon laws were under certain circumstances you can get a refund or reimbursement for vet bills.
