Airplane part falls onto home's front lawn

ROOSEVELT, N.Y. The 20 pound cone came plummeting from the sky, thousands of feet down onto Michelle Russell's front yard.

The plane part, 4 feet long and 3 feet wide, ended up in the driveway on Lincoln Avenue in Roosevelt

"Thank God it didn't land on a child," Russell said.

The part brought down a tree limb, but neighbors say could have been bad because of the kids in the area.

According to the FAA, an engine tail cone popped off of a Delta airline jet shortly after takeoff from Kennedy Airport on Thursday evening.

Russell says initially she and her neighbors tried to figure out what it was and how it got there

"I knew it came from the heavens and then we realized, oh plane part," she said.

FAA officials say the plane doesn't need the cone to fly and passengers were never in danger.

The flight continued to its destination. Salac says Delta personnel reported the part missing after the plane landed in Tokyo.

Neighbors are accustomed to planes flying overhead, but parts like this one crashing down? Well, that's a different story

"It's spooky. It really is," she said.

Delta says an investigation is underway.
