In Newark, it's Lights! Camera! $85 ticket!

NEWARK Newark on Wednesday will begin using red-light cameras at busy intersections to fine motorists who don't stop.

Several other New Jersey communities have been approved to install the cameras, but Newark will be the first to issue fines.

The cameras snap pictures of vehicle license plates and the owner gets a letter along with an $85 fine. No points will be assigned.

The pictures can be viewed online and motorists can appeal.

The first cameras will be in operation at the intersections of Broad and Market streets and Broad Street and Raymond Boulevard.

More are planned for other intersections in the city.
