Police press on in search for missing Newburgh boy

NEWBURGH Police say Marc Anthony Bookal vanished from the Newburgh apartment Monday. They've been using dogs and dive teams have been checking the nearby Hudson River but have reported no new information in the case.

Cory Byrd, the boyfriend of Marc's mother, has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child. The 30-year-old Byrd also was charged with a parole violation. He's being held in Orange County Jail.

Police haven't called Byrd a suspect in the boy's disappearance.

Newburgh is about 60 miles north of New York City and has one of the highest crime rates in the state.

Byrd was also arrested in 1998 after his own son was hospitalized with a fractured skull, broken ribs, a broken wrist and perferated liver. He was charged with reckless endangerment after a number of inconsistaces in his story.

This time, he remains in custody, has asked for a lawyer and is not talking. But Marc's mother is supporting him.

"Marc and him had a good relationship," Christina Bookal said. "I'm not a stupid mother."

Marc Bookal suffered burns to his hands, which his mother claims was an accident, a story that has been met with skepticism by many in the community.

Marc Anthony was last seen wearing a red, long-sleeve shirt, white Nike Uptown sneakers and gray Rocawear sweatpants. He is light skinned, wears his hair in a medium length afro and has discolorations on the back of each hand from the previous burn injury.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Newburgh Police Department or 1-800-FIND-KID.
