NYC traffic fatalities at lowest level since 1910

NEW YORK Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Wednesday there were 256 traffic deaths in 2009, the fewest since records started being kept in 1910.

One category where deaths were slightly up was pedestrian fatalities. There were 155 last year compared with 151 in 2008.

Bloomberg said the overall success is due to better enforcement and a focus on street safety by the transportation department.
