NJ Gov. Christie to school employees: Skip raises

SOMERVILLE, N.J. Christie said Tuesday that those sacrifices would be enough to avert layoffs.

He laid out his plan on a visit to a Somerville elementary school and said he would send details in a letter to the New Jersey School Boards Association and the New Jersey Education Association.

Many school districts have been talking about deep layoffs since Christie announced last week that state and federal school aid would decrease by more than $800 million in his proposed budget.

A handful of teachers union locals have agreed to rework their contracts.
