Neighbors say they heard one shot and then found the body of the man.
An emergency medical crew was in the area, but could not save the victim.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No arrests were immediately made.
The death is the first reported murder in Newark since Feb. 28. The long-troubled city celebrated March as its first murder-free month since May of 1966.
